The Tranz Alpine Train Journey is one of the most spectacular scenic train journeys.

Your day starts with us picking you up from your accommodation and dropping you at the train station in time to be on the train. It leaves Christchurch at 8:15 am and arrives in Greymouth at 1:10 pm.

Travelling west, crossing the Canterbury Plains, the train slowly ascends through spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River towards the Southern Alps to the alpine village of Arthur's Pass for a short break before descending through the Otira Tunnel to the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, through lush alpine beech rainforests to Greymouth.

We will be in Greymouth to meet you when you get off the train. If you are wanting lunch, we recommend the Speight's Ale House just across the road from the train station.

Once your time in Franz Josef is complete, we will make our way back to Christchurch, via Hokitika and back up through Arthur's Pass. Stopping at the Otira Viaduct Lookout, for photos and hopefully see the world’s only alpine parrot, the Kea. A stop at Arthur's Pass for a quick break and refreshments. Scenic drive along the Waimakariri River and through the Alpine Plateau. With a stop at Castle Hill where you can explore the limestone boulders and have photos. We can stop by one or two of the Alpine Lakes to take in the wonderful scenery. Then down the Porters Pass Gorge and through the Canterbury Plains back to Christchurch.

There is a lot to see on this trip and it can be 2 – 4 days including the Tranz Alpine Train. It really depends on which sights and activities you choose to visit and see as well as how long you wish to spend in these magnificent places.
